Unai Emery, the person of the second, the supervisor whose title is on everyone’s lips, the person that others would make their king, walked into the cavernous press convention room on the Nou Camp simply after 8.15pm native time on Monday night.
That is solely a league recreation, early within the competitors however there was electrical energy within the room that comes with the anticipation of the collision forward. ‘That is elite soccer and Barcelona is at all times the favorite in a contest like this,’ Emery reminded his viewers, ‘however we even have a historical past.
‘In 1982, we received the Champions League, the so-called European Cup. Barcelona are the favourites due to the current and what they’ve executed during the last ten years. We’re consistently looking for new challenges. We need to come right here tomorrow evening and see how distant we’re from Barcelona.’
That is Emery in opposition to a giant membership. Towards one of many trendy elite. That is Emery and his wits in opposition to Lamine Yamal and Rodri and Raphinha. That is what Jamie Carragher, one in all Emery’s most vocal – and controversial – champions of current days, would name a ‘big’ membership. The phrase ‘Mes Que Un Membership’ is even written into the seats at this magnificent stadium. It’s the type of membership many imagine Emery is born for.
All people is lavishing reward upon him. A number of hours earlier, on the Barcelona coaching complicated in Sant Joan Despi, a number of miles west of the town, Hansi Flick, the Barca coach, waxed lyrical about Emery’s abilities and stated he was the rationale they have been anticipating such a troublesome match of their Champions League tie right here on Tuesday night.
‘Unai Emery is likely one of the greatest coaches in Europe and the world,’ Flick stated. ‘He’s very profitable. In the best way his staff performs, you may see a transparent construction in defence. And in offence, they’ve totally different patterns. For me, it’s wonderful to see his staff.

Flick additionally praised Nicolas Jackson, the Villa striker who has discovered his type below Emery
‘Their begin this season was not straightforward, however they got here again. You’ll be able to see the arrogance they’ve on the ball, how they play out, and Nicolas Jackson is at an unbelievable stage. For us, will probably be a troublesome recreation in opposition to staff and, as nicely, an excellent coach.’
Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle United in the summertime, had already given a press convention of spectacular maturity and thoughtfulness that had taken in his love of books and his mistrust of TikTok however he, too, was unstinting in his admiration for Emery.
‘Villa are an excellent staff,’ Gordon stated. ‘They’ve among the finest coaches on the planet proper now. They’re on an excellent run of late as nicely, so will probably be a tough recreation. They’re one of many groups who’re at all times in a recreation and are at all times prepared for any kind of recreation. Will probably be a really robust problem.’
Even the environs of the stadium appeared to pay homage to Emery’s abilities. Cranes nonetheless lean over the stands right here because the in depth renovations to the steepling stands proceed. Emery, everyone knows, is the grasp of the rebuild.
So by the point Emery walked out into that auditorium, it felt nearly as if this have been a remaining audition. That is the type of stuff that, understandably, enrages Villa and their followers due to its patronising tone however the extra spectacular his outcomes along with his membership, the extra folks counsel he ought to go elsewhere.
That’s what obtained Carragher in hassle. Carragher stated Manchester United needs to be making him their primary goal as a result of he’s one of the best supervisor within the league. ‘Certainly, he would need the chance to handle a large once more,’ Carragher stated, aiming a few expletives at Villa supporters for good measure.
Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris threatened to take authorized motion in opposition to Carragher, Carragher apologised and all was forgotten. However whereas Emery thrives and a supervisor at one of many elite European golf equipment struggles, he’ll proceed to be linked to these positions. It’s the manner it has at all times been.
And anyway, Emery can be mad to go to United if Michael Carrick leaves Outdated Trafford within the subsequent few weeks. Not simply because United is a basket-case of a membership run by individuals who wouldn’t enable the supervisor to have something like the extent of management he enjoys at Villa, the place he has good house owners who belief him and assist him to the hilt.
Emery has been talked about as a successor to Michael Carrick at Manchester United
Emery is aware of what it may be like at so-called larger golf equipment like PSG and Arsenal, when impatience runs wild and expectations are absurd and assist begins to wane. His greatest path to the very high is at a membership like Villa. As a result of Villa are near being giants and, with him as boss, they’ll bridge the hole to the elite.
Emery misplaced most of his first staff in the summertime – Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen and Leon Bailey all left – however he has long-established a brand new thrilling facet of their stead already.
Villa are unbeaten of their final 5 video games within the Premier League, together with a victory that handed Manchester Metropolis their first defeat of the season, and sit second solely to PSG on the high of the nascent Champions League desk, with three straight wins. Emery is burnishing his repute as a soccer magician. He’s the sport’s hottest managerial property once more.
If Villa get a outcome on the Nou Camp, hypothesis about the way forward for Emery, who will flip 55 on the day of the sport, will run wild once more. It’s certain to. It’s a praise to each supervisor and membership, though it’s unlikely Villa will see it that manner. The enjoyment of the outcomes he’s producing is tempered solely by the concern of dropping him.
However for all his success in Europe – he has received the Europa League 5 occasions, most not too long ago with Villa in Istanbul final summer time – he has a depressing file on the Nou Camp. He has introduced six totally different golf equipment right here and misplaced 14 of the 15 matches he has managed. His sole victory was with Villarreal in Could 2022.
He has one explicit ghost to slay on this competitors. As a result of the Nou Camp was the scene of La Remontada, or ‘the comeback’, when Emery’s PSG introduced a 4-0 result in Barcelona for the second leg of a Spherical of 16 tie. PSG had received the primary leg on the Parc des Princes 4-0 in March 2017 however Barcelona swept them apart 6-1 again in Catalonia.
The point out of that recreation was the one time through the press convention when Emery bristled. When requested what his reminiscence of it was, he stated sharply: ‘Yet another.’ Only one recreation amongst tons of, he appeared to be saying. ‘I performed in Europe 16 years in a row and I’ve discovered in all of them. I discovered so, a lot. That evening, I discovered on sports activities facet and never the sports activities facet.’
Alongside him, John McGinn spoke compellingly, too. He spoke about coming right here simply as soon as earlier than, on a stadium tour when he was eight years outdated and he and his household have been on their technique to a vacation within the Canary Islands.
Emery has one explicit ghost to slay on this competitors as a result of the Nou Camp was the scene of La Remontada, when his PSG facet misplaced regardless of coming with a 4-0 lead within the first leg
‘I’m 32 years outdated and the trajectory of this membership is permitting me to dream the dream of taking part in in entrance of the largest crowds within the greatest arenas,’ McGinn stated. ‘We need to make this a yearly expertise to compete with the largest groups in England and Europe.’
Emery additionally talked about Gordon as one of many parts he admires within the Barcelona facet. Listening to him earlier, it was clear that he has already grown, each on and off the pitch since his transfer to Spanish soccer.
‘The problem of becoming a member of Barca is totally different to what I’ve had earlier than,’ Gordon stated, ‘as a result of after I was at Everton, I used to be combating relegation for 2 or three years, which was robust. At Newcastle we have been combating for the Champions League and to push up the tables, and now I’m at a membership the place we’re combating for each trophy.
‘I actually loved all three as a result of they arrive with various things that can assist you as an individual, enable you develop. I believe to be competing on each entrance for each trophy is certainly probably the most gratifying. I believe folks suppose it is extra stress, however it’s truly much less stress than combating relegation and combating to push up the desk for the Champions League. I need to win each trophy. I need to be one of the best. This membership permits me to take action.’
Earlier than he left, Gordon spoke about how he rations his time on social media and reads extra books and goes on extra walks. ‘Once you’re in that wheel of dopamine habit and also you’re scrolling on social media, it’s a must to come away from it and get again to what’s actual,’ he stated.
On Tuesday evening within the Nou Camp, Emery and Villa will take the following step on their advance on Europe and the remainder of us will discover out what’s actual and what’s not.
