When the full-time whistle went at Wembley and Crystal Palace had defied all the chances to win the FA Cup, John Textor leaned over a row of Royal Field seats to embrace Steve Parish.
After Eberechi Eze’s purpose gained them the primary trophy of their 120-year historical past, the picture depicted an possession group that was united and jubilant. In actuality, their relationship was something however.
On Thursday, Palace will reopen previous wounds once they journey to Lyon for the Textor Derby. The disgraced former proprietor of each golf equipment might be nowhere to be seen and that is most likely for one of the best, given the acrimony in direction of him in each France and south London.
With out his cross-Channel multi-club community, Palace might effectively have been taking part in within the Europa League final season. As an alternative they had been demoted by advantage of no two golf equipment with the ability to play in the identical UEFA competitors and Nottingham Forest – now Public Enemy No1 in Croydon – took Palace’s place. And the animosity extends past the supporters.
Textor arrived at Palace in August 2021, buying the most important minority stake within the membership for £87.5million earlier than rising his shareholding to 43 per cent three years later. But, regardless of his makes an attempt, Textor did not convert his fairness into management. On a number of events, he tried to buy a majority stake however was constantly blocked.
That irked him. Chairman Parish, the membership’s final decision-maker regardless of proudly owning considerably much less of it than Textor, angered him. Textor deemed Parish risk-averse, whereas Parish seen Textor as a danger to the membership. However Parish had the measure of him, utilizing the Missouri-born former aggressive skateboarder’s capital to repay debt throughout Covid, develop the academy website and strengthen the taking part in squad with out giving him decision-making energy.

Textor’s possession of Lyon meant that Palace had been kicked out of the Europa League final season, as no two groups in the identical competitors can have the identical controlling accomplice
In the meantime, Textor needed Palace to be the cornerstone of his multi-club possession group, Eagle Soccer, which owned Lyon, Brazilian top-flight aspect Botafogo and the now-defunct RWD Molenbeek of Belgium. Provided that Textor has since misplaced all of the golf equipment amid monetary mismanagement, Parish’s wariness has been vindicated.
Textor needed Parish to prioritise the taking part in squad and was aggrieved by ring-fencing money for Selhurst Park’s new Primary Stand. Some consider Textor by no means supported the event, with the problem typically prompting bust-ups.
In truth, sources instructed Each day Mail Sport that Parish and Textor had common slanging matches within the boardroom whereas workers had been current. One supply recalled events when Textor stormed out, explaining that the pair clashed over their respective self-righteousness.
Publicly, Parish and Textor principally placed on a united entrance, although Textor made some snide digs in regards to the ‘pink Ferrari driving chairman’ in an interview with talkSPORT. Behind the scenes, nevertheless, the pair by no means hid their dislike or the strain between them – and Textor ultimately misplaced a lot of his curiosity in Palace after realising his sway was restricted and he couldn’t additional his multi-club community ambitions.
Probably the most disruptive interval got here throughout Textor’s exit. He had been trying to promote for a while however the course of was accelerated after the FA Cup win granted Palace entry into the Europa League for the next marketing campaign, the place the Lyon drawback reared its head.
There was maybe another excuse for Textor’s expediency. Lyon had issues of their very own – the seven-times French champions had been within the technique of being kicked out of Ligue 1 by the French soccer authorities (DNCG).
However when Textor’s cash got here in from promoting his Palace stake to Woody Johnson, the previous US Ambassador to the UK and proprietor of the NFL’s New York Jets, they happy the DNCG’s calls for and had been reinstated not simply to the French prime flight but in addition the Europa League.
So in the long run, promoting Palace and releasing them from the multi-club community resulted in Lyon taking their Europa League place. Palace had been demoted to the Convention League – which they went on to win to once more qualify for the Europa League – as a result of Textor nonetheless had ‘decisive affect’ on the March 1, 2025 deadline for possession conflicts to be resolved for the next season.

‘F*** UEFA, f*** John Textor, f*** Marinakis’ has turn into a staple chant at matches and can virtually definitely be heard all through the match on the Groupama Stadium on Thursday evening.
Textor has each publicly and privately advised that supporters are naive for blaming him. After all, the Europa League demotion is the emotional supply of their frustration. Nonetheless, the Textor resentment originated in considerations over his ambition to place Eagle Soccer Holdings on the inventory market and fears over whether or not he had appropriate funding.
Having beforehand held stakes in 4 golf equipment, Textor now has none.
Palace and Lyon are beneath new administration, Botafogo voted him off their board this summer season a couple of months after the membership had been hit with a three-window switch ban for non-payment of a switch price, and Molenbeek misplaced their Belgian soccer league licence in August over monetary difficulties. On the prime of all of it, Eagle Soccer Holdings went into administration in March.
It must be mentioned that Palace had not deliberate effectively sufficient for the opportunity of taking part in European soccer. Had they finished so, Textor’s shares may have been positioned in a blind belief earlier than the deadline and the scenario averted. Whether or not Textor would have agreed to that whereas attempting to promote up, although, is one other matter.
Intriguingly, one Palace supply defended Textor when talking to Each day Mail Sport. The supply argued that Textor was the driving power behind Palace appointing Oliver Glasner two years in the past and that the funding he made helped to pay for the signings of Marc Guehi and Michael Olise, suggesting that none of Palace’s three trophies within the final 18 months would have been potential with out the American. That’s an unpopular opinion amongst followers to say the least, although.
Even after his exit, there stays a tenuous hyperlink to the membership. John Textor’s son, Addison, is employed by Velocity Capital – an American personal fairness agency owned by minority Palace shareholder David Abrams. The agency invested greater than £75m in main soccer company Distinctive Sports activities Group, which represents previous and current Palace gamers Dean Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Marc Guehi and Dwight McNeil.
Underneath Textor’s possession, Botafogo gained the Copa Libertadores in 2024 however he was voted off the membership’s board in July this 12 months

It was Textor who appointed now-Palace boss Pierre Sage as Lyon head coach in 2023. He led them to the French Cup ultimate in his first season however was sacked the next January
Palace followers will use their journey to Lyon to lambast Textor as soon as once more and the house crowd is more likely to take part. Though Lyon’s involvement prevented Palace from competing within the Europa League, there isn’t a bitterness between the 2 golf equipment – each equally disdain Textor.
Lyon endured persistent battles with the DNCG because of Textor build up debt, the provisional relegation final summer season and being compelled to promote key gamers due to their monetary scenario. Satirically, supporters additionally fumed over his determination to sack now-Palace boss Pierre Sage, a choice Textor admits he now regrets.
When Palace gained the Convention League to qualify for the Europa League final season, they had been virtually destined to face Lyon.
That is the ultimate chapter of their Textor debacle and, until it is of their favorite chant, everybody at Palace will hope Thursday evening is the final time he enters their ideas.
